Q: What brought you to YouthBuild? / Why did you leave your previous school(s) and what made you want to enroll at YouthBuild Charter?
Israel: I left my previous school because I felt that it did not provide the support I needed to thrive academically and personally. I struggled with some subjects and found it difficult to engage in a traditional classroom setting where my learning style was not accommodated. After researching alternative educational options, I discovered YouthBuild Charter and was drawn to its unique approach that combines education with vocational training and community service. The emphasis on hands-on learning aligns perfectly with my interests in developing practical skills while also giving back to my community. I believe that enrolling at YouthBuild is not only helping me catch up academically but also preparing me for a successful career in construction management, which is my goal.
Q: What made you want to come to school each day?
Israel: I look forward to coming to school each day because I am excited about learning new things and engaging in discussions that challenge my thinking. Additionally, the friendships I have formed with my classmates make every day enjoyable and motivate me to participate actively in school activities.
Q: What obstacles have you had to face on the road to graduation?
Israel: Throughout my journey to graduation, I have faced significant obstacles such as balancing academic responsibilities with part-time work to support my family and overcoming personal challenges related to mental health. These experiences have taught me resilience and the importance of seeking help when needed, ultimately shaping my determination to succeed.
Q: What did you like most about your YouthBuild Charter School of California experience?
Israel: What I liked most about my YouthBuild Charter School of California experience was the supportive community that fostered personal growth and development, as well as the hands-on learning opportunities that prepared me for future success. The combination of academic education and vocational training empowered me to pursue my goals with confidence.
Q: What has been your favorite YouthBuild memory?
Israel: My favorite memory is probably the fermentation experiment. It was fascinating to see how yeast transformed sugar into carbon dioxide and alcohol, demonstrating the science behind fermentation in a hands-on way.
Q: How did your YouthBuild Charter School experience compare to your previous school experience?
Israel: My experience at YouthBuild Charter School was significantly better than my previous school because I feel heard and engaged in the learning process, allowing me to truly understand what the teachers are saying instead of getting lost.
Q: What is a skill/lesson you learned at YouthBuild Charter School of California that you think will stick with you after you graduate?
Israel: One key skill I learned at YouthBuild Charter School of California is the importance of resilience, which has taught me how to overcome challenges and persist in my goals. This lesson will stick with me as I navigate future obstacles in both my personal and professional life.
Q: Did you have a favorite CAP (community action project) or APT (authentic performance task) you worked on?
Israel: I enjoyed every CAP and APT I participated in, as each offered unique learning opportunities and valuable experiences. While I don’t have a specific favorite, I appreciate how each project contributed to my growth.
Q: Who or what has helped motivate you to graduate?
Israel: My determination to graduate has been fueled by the unwavering support of my family and friends, who have always believed in my potential. Additionally, the inspiring teachers at my school have motivated me to push through challenges and strive for excellence.
Q: What are your plans after graduation?
Israel: After graduation, I plan to attend Fresno City College and major in either Art or Theater Arts. I am excited to explore my creative passions and develop my skills in these fields.
