Over the past seven years, we have been lucky enough to have some amazing AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) members serving at YouthBuild Charter School of California. AmeriCorps VISTA members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, strengthen community groups, and much more. With passion, commitment, and hard work, VISTAs create or expand programs designed to bring individuals and communities out of poverty.
VISTA has been a great opportunity for recent college graduates to take a gap year before going to graduate school. Taking a gap year before graduate school is a fantastic way to get hands-on work experience, explore a potential career option, make connections, and further strengthen your resume. We offer a supportive and flexible environment to VISTAs who are preparing for the LSAT, MCAT and GRE and applying to law school, med school, and graduate school. Past VISTAs have gone on to Berkeley Law, UC San Diego’s Graduate School in Education and Counseling, and Clark University’s Geographic Information Science graduate program. Other VISTAs have found employment as teachers, counselors and school administrators after finishing service.
By serving through VISTA at YouthBuild Charter, you’ll gain new professional skills, build meaningful relationships, and lasting experiences—plus you’ll get the satisfaction that comes from helping others. Working with our leadership team provides VISTAs an invaluable opportunity to learn about the world of education through charter schools in California, multi-site organizational management, partnership cultivation, and so much more.
Although VISTAs are considered volunteers, they do receive compensation, including:
- A modest living allowance based on the local poverty rate ($15,996 for Los Angeles)
- AmeriCorps Education award ($5,815) or cash stipend ($1,500) upon completion of a full year of service, and forbearance for government backed student loans
- Child care benefits (if eligible)
- Relocation assistance of $500 if moving more than 50 miles
- 20 days off per year (for both sick days and vacation time)
- Public Transportation Stipend up to $75 per month for job-related transit
