Scholarships for YouthBuild Charter Seniors and Grads

This year, we have two amazing scholarship opportunities that are exclusively for our YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC) seniors and graduates. If you are a current student or alum who is either currently enrolled or planning to enroll in college during the Fall 2017 semester, don’t hesitate, apply to these scholarships today!

CODEchella Scholarship Fund made possible by Colocation America

Any students or alumni who participated in any CODEchella (or WebSlam) events at YCSC and are planning on pursuing a degree in a STEM-related field are eligible to apply. Those who are selected will receive up to $1,000 for their post-secondary education and will become part of a STEM mentorship program. Colocation America is proud to support YouthBuild Charter School of California, CODEchella, and the 150+ young people who have discovered their passion for STEM through these innovative education opportunities. This year they are taking their support beyond the YouthBuild classroom and have created the CODEchella Scholarship Fund, which will provide young people with the additional assistance necessary to further their STEM education.

Purpose of Scholarship:
The purpose of this funding is to aid CODEchella alumni in funding their continuous education in STEM-related fields.

Eligible Students:
Any YouthBuild Charter School of California student who has attended CODEchella and will be continuing their education in the Fall of 2017 in a STEM-related field.

CODEchella Scholarship Fund Application Requirements:

  • Submit Online Application* – contact information and extracurricular activities and/or awards & honors received
  • Submit 3 Essays – 2 required prompts and 1 prompt of your choosing.
  • Submit 3 References – 1 must be from a teacher and 2 from other appropriate reference (see application for specifics)

Once Selected, Student Requirements Include:

  • Attend 2 Events – Induction Ceremony (TBD) and Spring Event (TBD)
  • Engage with Mentor – Communicate a minimum of once a month
  • Engage with YouthBuild’s STEM Director – Communicate a minimum of every 3 months
  • Fill Out 2 Surveys – A 6-Month Evaluation Survey and End-of-Year Survey
  • Maintain a GPA of 2.5

Use of Funding:
Funds may be used for school-related expenses including, but not limited to, books and tuition.

Please note that the grant is for $1,000 and will be disbursed in two parts depending on enrollment status and grade point average.

Selection Process:
All applications will be reviewed by a committee. Applications will be reviewed based on merit.

Education Is Forever Scholarship 

Our Education Is Forever Scholarship Fund is open to all YouthBuild Charter School of California graduating seniors and alumni who are enrolled or planning to enroll in college for Fall 2017.  The application is hosted online using Google Forms. Applicants are advised to fill out their responses in a Word doc first, and then copy/paste into the online application as they will be required to fill out the entire online application in one sitting (can’t save progress.) About:
In lieu of a diamond engagement ring, The Education Is Forever Scholarship was created by Irene Hsieh and Aaron Scholl in 2015 to celebrate the lasting impact that education has on a person’s future. This scholarship supports YouthBuild graduates by reducing the economic barriers for college success and aid them in fulfilling their great potential as community leaders. If you are selected, this scholarship will provide financial support (up to $1,000 per year) that you can use on anything you want. The disbursement amount and schedule will depend on your enrollment status and Grade Point Average in college.
Purpose of Scholarship:
To make college attainable for all YouthBuild Charter grads and eliminate any barriers that may keep young people from enrolling, such as lack of transportation, need for childcare, or immigrant status.
Education Is Forever Scholarship Application Requirements:
  • Must be a graduating YouthBuild Charter School of California senior or a graduate who is currently enrolled or planning to enroll in college starting Fall 2017.
  • Must complete the online application (linked here)
  • Submit 3 essays (2 are required of all applicants, the other is the applicant’s choice between 3 options)
  • Submit 2 references (using an online application form linked here)

Once Selected, Student Requirements Include:

  • Maintain a 3.0 GPA (scholarship amount may change if you dip under 3.0)
  • Participation in Education Is Forever Mentorship Program
  • Submit proof of enrollment, schedule, and transcripts each semester

Use of Funding:
Scholarship funds are not limited to tuition and books. You may use the scholarship money for other life expenses as they relate to your college education (including child care, transportation, rent, etc.)

Selection Process:
All applications will be reviewed by at least two members of the Education Is Forever Scholarship Committee and judged using a rubric. Winners will be announced by Friday, June 16th.
