Dream School

YouthBuild Charter School works with Sundance Channel on “Dream School”

YouthBuild Charter School of California (YCSC) was approached by Jamie Oliver’s Fresh One Productions at the end of 2012 to see if we’d be interested in partnering with them on a Sundance Channel original reality series called “Dream School.” The program would feature 15 former high school dropouts, who are given a chance to go back to school and earn 10 credits as they are taught by a series of celebrity teachers, including Suze Orman, Soledad O’Brien, and Oliver Stone. Fresh One wanted to bring the program, which originally aired in the U.K., to the United States and needed an education partner.

The producers wanted to be sure that the students who participated in the show would actually be able to earn 10 high school credits during the month of filming, and to do so, they needed to partner with an accredited school with credentialed teachers. YCSC was thrilled to bring its successful project-based education model to a wider audience and agreed to come on board. The students were all enrolled at our school during the month of filming, and several of them are still enrolled with us at our Slauson and Palmdale locations. Three credentialed YCSC teachers– Emily Bautista (Social Studies), Scott Whitney (English), and Tizoc Brenes (Math, Science, Technology)– worked with the celebrity Dream School teachers to craft curricula and teach lessons that would effectively engage the students featured in the show through hands-on, authentic learning. Our talented teachers had a great time working with the celebrity teachers during the month of filming and are still deeply involved in the lives of the students who were featured. Although Emily, Scott and Tizoc may not be celebrities like 50 Cent (who served as both a motivational speaker and executive producer on “Dream School”) we think they are super stars!

Dream School will be airing on Mondays at 10pm on the Sundance Channel, premiering October 7th.
